The UK's largest onshore wind farm is turned on

21st May 2009 Print
Wind turbines have the "Marmite" effect on most people - you either love them or you hate them, but one thing is for sure, in a world that needs to focus on renewable energy sources, wind farms are here to stay.

The East Renfrewshire site which was opened this week, covers an area of 55km and has 140 turbines which are capable of supplying the energy for 180,000 homes, equivalent to a city the size of Glasgow.

Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at Confused.com says "This is a welcome boost to the Government's 2020 carbon reduction target. It follows hot on the heels of the announcement earlier in the month that the world's largest offshore wind farm is to be built 12 miles off the coast of Kent, with the aim of supplying a further 750,000 homes.

"Whilst it's encouraging to see such large scale investment in Britain's renewable energy future, it's still just a drop in the ocean, when compared with other sources of energy, such as nuclear, coal and natural gas. So if customers would prefer to see the energy companies spending more on wind rather than other sources of energy, they can vote with their feet and choose a greener tariff."

For customers who are interested about the source of their energy, Confused.com shows the fuel mix of each energy supplier on its website, so that they can make an informed decision when choosing which supplier and tariff to switch to.

Each of the suppliers have a different fuel mix to make up the energy that they generate, so for those who wish to be better informed, they can check out the fuel mixes on the Confused.com website, before deciding on which tariff and supplier to choose.

In general, a green tariff will be a little more expensive but as more people choose these tariffs, the energy companies will have to spend more on renewable energy sources.
