David Kuo, Director at the financial website The Motley Fool - Fool.co.uk, comments on the annual results for Scottish & Southern Energy: "Scottish & Southern Energy shareholders will be delighted by the company's decision to hike the total dividend payout for the year by 9% to 66p a share. Currently the shares yield 6%, which positions it as one of the highest yielding companies in the FTSE 100.

"Dividends are an integral part of investing, and Scottish & Southern's dividend track record is enviable. Over the last decade, it has increased its payout to shareholders by an average of 9% a year.

"Dividends are sometimes seen by investors as a nice-to-have ribbon on a parcel of shares. But while share prices tend to grab most of the headlines it is dividends that do the important work behind the scenes in any portfolio."
