Get your car’s life story

Used car buyers shouldn’t underestimate the value of a full service history, warns BCA, (British Car Auctions). Not only does a service history increase the value of the car when it comes to selling it on, but it protects buyers by giving an insight into the present state and mileage of the vehicle. Buyers need to think ahead, because when it comes to selling their vehicle, a full service history will add value – however it is sold.

Simon Henstock, Network Operations Director at BCA explains: “At auction, a full service history shows that a vehicle has been well maintained by the previous owner and confirms that the mileage is correct. This helps promote buyer confidence and can add significant value.”

“We estimate for the typical three year old, 60,000 mile ex-fleet car it could mean an additional £300 to £500 on the average value of around £7,000, depending on the condition of the car.”

The more expensive the car, the more value a full service history has at the time of sale, says BCA. For cars in the £20,000 to £25,000 bracket, a missing service history might cost the seller as much as £2,500, making a significant dent in the price. Luxury and performance cars are unlikely to attract buyers at all without a service history, and even a ‘part-history’ is better than none.

“Buyers should be wary of bagging a bargain that comes without a service history” concluded Simon Henstock. “We advise customers to look for a full service history, because it demonstrates how well the car has been maintained - and this advice is applicable wherever you buy a car from. And providing they maintain the service history as the new owner, it will help them get a good price when it’s their turn to sell.”
