Motorist driving smarter to save environment – RMIF approves

13th September 2007 Print
‘It makes sense that the reduction of vehicle CO2 emissions goes hand-in hand with encouraging motorists to drive their cars in a way that helps the environment,‘ said Alec Murray, chairman of the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF), commenting on a new report looking at carbon emissions and driver habits.

The report, published today by the Commission for Integrated Transport (CfIT), the Government’s transport advisor, suggests promoting eco-driving techniques, such as sensible acceleration and braking, and filling tyres to the correct pressure alongside an overall reduction in carbon emissions from vehicles.

Murray continues: ‘The motor industry is working hard to reduce emissions and is constantly developing new technologies to help this process, but good motoring behaviour can only bring further benefits.’

The report suggests that motorists:

Adhere to speed limits
Accelerate gently
Limit air conditioning
Drive with windows closed and roof rack removed to reduce drag
Avoid idling engine
Fill tyres to optimum pressure

Keep safe distance from car in front to avoid wasting fuel via sharp braking
Murray adds: ‘The report suggests the kind of practical driving and car maintenance tips that all drivers should adhere to anyway, as they reduce strain on the car, making it a more efficient machine.
