NFDA tells members – check data protection procedures
Motor retailers need to put systems in place to protect any vital customer data they hold, and be aware of their responsibilities under the Data Protection Act, according to the RMI’s National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA).Dealers will routinely hold customer bank and credit card details, and it is important that this information is protected. Now is a good time to make sure that controls are in place.
Sue Robinson, NFDA director commented: ‘ The loss of the personal details of 25 million people by HM Revenue and Customs has highlighted the importance of protecting sensitive information, and the consequences if a mistake is made.’
The Data Protection Act requires all organisations which handle personal information to comply with a number of important principles regarding privacy and disclosure.
‘Dealers need to make sure that data being held is secure, and that controls are in place to make sure that only authorized access is possible,’ added Robinson
NFDA Members are urged to check their data responsibilities with the Office of the Information Commissioner. They may also contact the NFDA for more information on the issue.
