Cold snap shows drivers need to be prepared for the worst

19th December 2007 Print
This week’s cold snap, and news of more traffic accidents as a result, should be enough to remind drivers that they need to be prepared for icy roads, says ProTyre, the UK’s leading independent tyre fitting network. Cold weather tyres, such as the ones from Michelin being stocked by ProTyre, offer improved levels of grip and precision in wet or icy conditions. The Michelin cold weather tyre ranges, for both car and 4x4, have been developed specifically for all winter driving conditions and to look after the safety needs of the driver.

Cold weather tyres are manufactured using a higher amount of natural rubber in the tread compound than ‘standard’ summer tyres, which are fitted to the majority of vehicles in the UK. The difference in the make-up of the tyre means that the optimum operating temperature is 7°C and below – ideal for the average temperatures seen across the UK during the winter months – and also boast superior handling characteristics in wet conditions.

The harsh conditions that tyres have to endure during the winter months increase the rate of wear on summer tyres as they struggle to cope with the wet, cold and icy conditions. Commonly fitted in European countries which suffer more extreme winters, cold weather tyres wear at a rate of around 20 percent less than summer tyres, and are designed to provide superior precision and grip as well as offering longevity and optimum performance in harsh conditions.

In addition to offering a whole range of cold weather tyres, throughout the month of December, ProTyre is offering drivers free safety checks for cars, 4x4s and motorbikes, and the chance to win a hamper full of festive foods from Marks & Spencer. Before you head off on holiday, drop into your local ProTyre outlet, or visit www.ProTyre.co.uk to find your local ProTyre centre.
