Possible jail sentences for drivers caught using a mobile phone

20th December 2007 Print
Direct Line comments on possible two year jail sentences for drivers caught using mobile phones.

Carmel McCarthy, Motor Spokesperson at Direct Line, said: “The use of mobile phones whilst driving can be a major distraction and a serious threat to road safety. Direct Line Insurance welcomes any guidelines that promote responsible driving as a positive move.

In February 2007, research by Direct Line showed that at any given time one million UK motorists were using their handheld mobile phone whilst driving.

The implementation of stricter rules and stronger penalties helps to heighten public awareness and reinforce the dangers of using electronic gadgets when driving.”
