Forget the gym! Look after the health of your vehicle

8th January 2008 Print
After eating and drinking a-plenty during the festive season, getting fit regularly tops many New Year’s resolution lists. However, according to a recent study by Motorpoint, the UK’s largest car supermarket, the priority for motorists should be keeping their own vehicle in shape to avoid repair bills which could run into thousands.

As the majority of commuters return to work after the Christmas break, the latest research by the retailer has shown that nearly 60% of motorists are not checking their oil and coolant levels therefore running the risk of doing significant and very costly damage to their engine. Drivers will equally be paying more at the pump because of failing to check their tyre pressures on a regular basis. According to TyreSafe, the UK’s leading tyre safety organisation, under-inflated tyres and bad driving practice costs motorists over £2 billion in extra fuel, and releases 5.5 million tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Commenting on the findings, David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint, explains: “The new year is a time when many motorists try to bring improvements to their lives, but the nation’s obsession with burning off calories following the Christmas period means that with the focus heavily on themselves, caring for their vehicles, what is often their second largest investment is often overlooked. As the only automotive retailer to become a member of RoadSafe, it is important that we continue to drive home the message to drivers of the potential dangers of not frequently checking the condition of their vehicle.”
