The PartsWorld Corsa VVTi – for road or track

Partsworld Performance introduces the complete track day Corsa at Autosport International. Designed as a fun alternative to more expensive machinery but retaining affordable maintenance costs, this Corsa has a specification that links the car to components normally used in full race competition with the ability to upgrade the car even further as budgets allow.

PartsWorld starts with a basic specification Corsa 3 door, either a new vehicle or a low mileage used example, the choice is yours. The lightest available model is chosen. The emphasis is to keep kerbweight low, enabling the car to respond and change direction with agility and to fully communicate with the driver.

The car is stripped back to a bare shell and any brackets, soundproofing, sealing compounds etc are removed.

A rear roll cage is fitted for added safety and shell rigidity and a full welded multipoint cage is an option should the owner want to get really serious. Racing seats are fitted with the driver’s seat adjustable on a rail system. The passenger seat is fixed in an optimum position for weight distribution and low centre of gravity. Each seat is backed up by a safety harness attached into the rear roll cage. The vehicle is trimmed to the minimum again to keep the weight down.

A race-style dash is fitted, this is functional for road legality and contains warning lights for indicators, main beam etc. A data logger is optional and the system records mileage keeping the car MOT friendly.

As an alternative to the current Turbo trend PartsWorld uses a normally aspirated motor giving razor sharp throttle response but a good flexible torque spread. The standard motor is removed and replaced with the variable valve application Z18XER engine, normally found in the Astra. This utilises a bespoke engine control unit for optimum performance and emissions control. The engine is optimised at around 160 bhp with the ability to run to 7500 rpm. These figures are based on current development which has seen 160 bhp running on standard exhaust manifolds.

The power unit is mated to a six speed GM gearbox with the option of a shorter ratio straight cut gearbox if required. Power is distributed through a Torsen type differential with a more conventional plate type diff also offered as an option.

The chassis set up is simple and non-adjustable keeping roll centres and costs low. Optimised spring rates and damper settings are applied for the best control. Any electronic stability programmes are removed and the electro power steering is adjustable for feel by using a rotary switch with varying weight settings. This is backed up by altered steering geometry and a road legal wheel and tyre package to give excellent feedback and progressive breakaway characteristics. A stiffer rear axle beam is used and a larger diameter anti-roll bar is used at the front. A fully adjustable race coil over set up is an option too.

Base brakes are a set up already well proven on Corsa, utilising original equipment discs with high performance friction material and braided brake hoses where rubber is normally fitted. Fluid is distributed by a bigger master cylinder and ABS is retained with an option to switch off. Optional too is a four piston front set up with more aggressive friction material.

Finishing off the car with style is the Aero pack, designed to optimise airflow over, around and under the car. Moulded body extensions are of OE manufacturing quality, all retaining excellent airflow properties and simple fitting locations.

The car can be built to any specification to suit the owner’s budget and how serious the use is likely to be.
