Tesco calls for fairness and equality in motor insurance industry

13th December 2005 Print
Tesco Car Insurance today calls on every motor insurer to take notice of the forthcoming Civil Partnerships Act and ensure they treat same sex couples fairly by offering the same discounts currently enjoyed by married couples.

Most insurers judge married people a safer risk and give them a discount of up to 15% off the price of their premium. However some household names still do not take the same approach to same sex couples.

Allan Burns, head of insurance at Tesco comments: "The Civil Partnerships Act redresses an imbalance in equality The whole motor insurance industry must make sure it has done the same."

In 2002, Tesco was one of the first motor insurers to take the view that life stage and not choice of life partner is a key indicator in determining pricing, by introducing an equality policy.
