Sterling weakens to €1.0595 to £1, but airports offer below parity

18th December 2008 Print
Commenting on the Sterling rate, Stephen Heath, Chief Executive of FairFX.com, said: "Sterling has fallen to just €1.0595 to £1, and is at its weakest rate ever today. The question is now when, not if, we see the Pound fall to just €1 to £1, and perhaps slip even lower.

"However, the fact we have not yet reached a point of Sterling equilibrium with the Euro hasn't stopped providers at airports and the Eurostar taking the opportunity offer less than parity at an average rate of just €0.981 to £1. This is because airports and travel hubs have long taken advantage of travellers who leave buying their holiday cash until they reach the airport by offering far worse rates than outside the terminal.

"Changing £200 at the average airport will only get holiday makers €196.20 - far less than €1 for £1, and at Birmingham and Liverpool Airports they will only get €187.88."
