Christmas motorists fail to make safety checks
Almost three in four motorists will fail to correctly check the condition of their tyres before setting off this Christmas weekend, according to research by Avon tyres. The survey, carried out on motorists embarking on journeys between 100 and 500 miles, revealed millions will leave home without sparing a thought for the condition of their tyres.
Less than half those interviewed checked their tyre pressures before their journey, with a staggering 70 percent not bothering with their spare. Only 32% regularly checked the depth of tread on their tyres.
Reassuringly, the survey revealed those travelling greater distances are almost three times (53% compared to 19%) as likely to check their tyre pressures, and four times (48% compared to 13%) as likely to check tread depth than those going on a short journey. However, Avon stress even a relatively brief journey will have an effect on the condition of the tyre, making regular checks an essential part of car maintenance.
"Friday is expected to be one of the busiest days on our roads, as friends and family make the great Christmas getaway. And with presents wrapped, suitcases packed and alternative routes decided, it’s easy to see why doing something like checking tyres is forgotten," says Avon Tyres product manager Malcolm Jones.
Jones continued: "But, tyres are your only contact with the road. Motorists should check their tyre pressure and condition before they head off, when the tyres are still cold to get an accurate reading."
Avon estimates British motorists are collectively wasting more than £1billion in tyre costs every year, and increasing the risk of an accident, by failing to keep an eye on their tyre pressure.
Correct tyre pressure levels can be found in the vehicle handbook.
