Cinema’s Most Iconic Dresses Revealed
Marilyn Monroe's sexy white halterneck dress has been voted the most iconic movie dress of all time, a new poll revealed yesterday (Monday). The dress, worn by the blonde bombshell in 1950's film The Seven Year Itch, was made famous in the scene where the skirt flies up after being hit with a blast of air from a subway vent.Since its release in 1955 the scene has been copied in hundreds of movies and photos, with celebrities across the world mimicking the famous pose.
Second in the poll, by women's fashion website Missbutterfly.co.uk, was Audrey Hepburn's iconic little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany's, in her role as Holly Golightly.
The shift dress, designed by Givenchy, recently sold at auction fetching a staggering £467,000 for charity.
Sexy cartoon character Jessica Rabbit was voted into third place by the 2,000 Brits who took part in the poll.
Her hour glass curves in the slinky red dress won the hearts of Roger Rabbit and millions of other men when Who Framed Roger Rabbit hit the screens in 1988.
Julia Robert's spotty polo dress in Pretty Woman followed and fellow screen siren Sharon Stone completed the top five with the white sleeveless dress seen in the infamous Basic Instinct leg-crossing scene.
Another white dress featured at number six - Princess Leia's Star Wars number followed by Olivia Newton John's floaty prom dress as Sandy in Grease.
Eighth in the list was Judy Garland's blue gingham 'Dorothy' dress from the Wizard of Oz - an outfit famously finished off by the sparking ruby slippers in the 1939 film.
Cartoon heroine Snow White scooped number nine slot with her blue and yellow dress and the top ten was rounded off by the slightly less feminine Robin Williams as Mrs Doubtfire.
The funny man donned make-up and a body suit, as well as the women's dress for the role as the loveable, buxom nanny.
He wasn't the only man in a dress to feature in the poll - Guy Pearce was voted nineteenth thanks to his outlandish dress as Felicia Jollygoodfellow in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
A spokesman for Mmissbutterfly.co.uk said: "Marylyn Monroe's white halterneck dress is truly iconic and is instantly recognisable worldwide.
"It goes to show what a powerful medium film is for fashion and actresses are often defined by what they wear from Audrey Hepburn's little black dress to Julie Andrews coat dress as Mary Poppins.
"However I'm not sure people will be flocking to copy Mrs Doubtfire's shapeless dress or at the other end of the scale - Guy Pearce's outrageous cross-dressing numbers!"
