Even supermodels get nervous

13th May 2009 Print
Anyone who dreams of becoming a model but doubts whether they could ever overcome their self-consciousness, take note. Speaking recently, famous model and host of Australia's Next Top Model Sarah Murdoch has revealed that even the biggest models get nervous before a big shoot.

It might be hard to believe, but Murdoch has said that, especially early in her modelling career, she was painfully shy and demanded a high level of privacy during her photo shoots.

"I just had no confidence at all and was so embarrassed. I was the world's worst model, I don't know how I kept going," she says. "For years, and I am not exaggerating, I had to have this black border around me and the photographer so that no one else could watch me. I was so self-conscious."

Regardless, Murdoch, now 36 years old and married to Murdoch media heir Lachlan with whom she has two children, went on to enjoy a very successful modelling career.

In her latest role as the new presenter of the fifth series of Fox Television reality show Australia's Next Top Model, Murdoch will maintain her connection to her modelling career.

“It’s very interesting to hear what goes through the mind of a famous model when they are at work,” says Managing Director of nationwide UK modelling agency Models Direct Damian O’Connor.

“Often when a young person first starts to think about becoming a model , they look to the big stars of the modelling industry and assume that these people are supremely confident in themselves and that they would never struggle with shyness,” says O’Connor.

“What Sarah Murdoch’s comments show is that it’s okay to be a bit nervous, it’s normal to be a bit shy, and you can still go on to have successful modelling career.”

The good news, says O’Connor, is that for the most part, a model who does work through Models Direct reports back after the job having had great fun and looking forward to doing it again.
