HRT - it's decision time!
“HRT or No HRT?” is a question asked by thousands of women every day in the UK. Taking HRT has many pros and cons, and what is right for one woman may not be right for the next. All women need to speak to their GP to make an informed choice, and this usually involves doing some research into their own medical history and family background. In the Winter 2006/7 issue of The Menopause Exchange newsletter, retired GP Dr Stuart Drew looks at all the factors influencing the HRT decision-making process. In particular, he lists the benefits and risks of HRT and any contraindications.
“HRT isn’t right for everyone, but it can help many menopausal women lead normal lives free from troublesome symptoms like severe hot flushes,” says Norma Goldman, founder and director of The Menopause Exchange. “Women have to make their own decision, influenced by sound medical advice from their health professional. They should also consider the alternatives like complementary therapies and lifestyle changes.”
The Menopause Exchange covers a wide range of subjects like menopausal symptoms, HRT and its alternatives, nutrition and lifestyle and medical conditions (e.g. breast cancer). It’s completely independent – not sponsored by any companies – and is funded purely by subscriptions. Other articles in the Winter 2006/7 issue include bone-friendly lifestyles, giving up smoking and essential tests at the menopause. The Menopause Exchange has an Ask the Experts panel and fact sheets specifically for members.
