Brits are in denial about the state of their health
Despite new health scares appearing almost daily and obesity rates on the rise, a staggering 12 million Brits do not do any exercise.In addition, almost 70 percent of people drink four or less glasses of water a day, and just half of us think we do enough exercise or get enough sleep.
In a report released today by Fitness First and BUPA to coincide with the launch of the BUPA Health Check + Tracker in Fitness First health clubs across the country, over 8,000 Britons were scored on a range of aspects that impact health including diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, stress and fitness.
Overall, people are very poor at exercise and it seems we are turning into a nation of couch potatoes. More than half of those surveyed are doing less than two hours exercise a week. This is below the Government recommended level for an adult which is a minimum of 30 minutes of at least moderate exercise five times a week.
This, however, could be linked to the fact that generally Brits think they are quite fit in comparison to how much exercise they do. Only a third gave themselves a poor fitness level compared to over half stating they did little exercise.
Retired people are surprisingly good at exercise - just under a fifth of those surveyed spending up to an amazing five hours a week exercising. It would appear that Brits should definitely be listening to their elders!
Generally, people rated their diets as ‘average’ to ‘pretty’ healthy, with half giving seven and over out of ten, with ten being an ‘extremely’ healthy diet, rising to 70 percent of retired people [rating themselves in the same ‘average’ to ‘pretty’ healthy categories or ‘extremely’ healthy].
Also, three out of ten people measured themselves as ‘very’ to ‘extremely’ stressed and those in full-time work, perhaps unsurprisingly, rated themselves the most stressed. They also rated worst on the work/life balance with over half giving between one and five out of ten.
A further 16 percent of those surveyed claimed not to drink alcohol and most people believed they were sensible drinkers. Only 12 percent of respondents said they drank a large amount of alcohol a week which would seem to contradict Britain being a nation of ‘binge-drinkers’.
“This research is eye-opening to current attitudes towards general wellbeing and it seems British people are in denial about how inactive they are. One in five people claim to do no exercise at all, but believe they are fit and healthy. Being physically active has proven health benefits as people who exercise reduce the risk of heart disease, strokes and type 2 diabetes by up to 50% and the risk of dying prematurely by 20-30%.
