Thread-vein sufferers cover up for summer

11th June 2008 Print
Thread-vein sufferers will be searching for cover-ups as most of us plan our summer wardrobes, according to one surgical skincare expert. Consultant surgeon Dr Brian Newman said those suffering from vein complaints are often troubled by warmer weather and try to avoid exposing their veins.

Thread veins are small veins which are found most commonly on the face and legs and their appearance can cause embarrassment to many.

Mr Newman said: "Sufferers will try and camouflage thread veins and this can be a heightened issue in the summer as the temperature outside rises.

"Some try to disguise the condition by covering up with clothes, where possible, or by using make-up to camouflage veins. A tan can often improve the appearance of the leg veins."

Rosacea, the term given to thread veins and redness on the face, can be accelerated by certain triggers and changing weather conditions, caffeinated drinks, red wine and spicy foods have all been suggested as heightening the complaint.

Dr Newman, who has been treating patients with skin complaints for years using a technique called thermocoagulation which uses microwave technology to penetrate the skin in a safe and measured way, said taking precautions in warmer weather is worthwhile. An effective sun block is advisable.

He added: "It is worth keeping cold drinks or water nearby and keeping refreshed to maintain a comfortable body temperature. This may help calm reddening."

Thermocoagulation effectively clears the area in a painless and non-invasive way and can even be completed in a lunch hour, following a briefing session.

Dr Newman treats patients at his clinics in Greater Manchester, Harley Street and Glasgow.
