Northern Lights - The sight of a lifetime

9th October 2008 Print
If you’ve been fortunate enough to have witnessed the dancing lights of the Aurora Borealis this autumn, consider yourself lucky – according to the latest research by eye health supplement, PreserVision, it’s the sight of a lifetime.

The study of over 3,500 people saw the Northern Lights beating the likes of the Egyptian Pyramids, the Great Wall of China and even the world from space to top the list of sights Britons would most like to see.

Top 10 sights Britons would most like to see in their lifetime:

1. Aurora Borealis (or Northern Lights)
2. World from space
3. Pyramids of Egypt
4. Great Barrier Reef
5. Niagara Falls
6. Grand Canyon
7. Amazon rainforest
8. Great Wall of China
9. Taj Mahal
10. Machu Picchu

October can be one of the best times to see the Northern Lights, but experts believe that a combination of atmospheric conditions and the deterioration of eye health could have an impact on whether many of us are able to realise our ambitions and see them.

“From the Great Barrier Reef to the Taj Mahal, our visual aspirations take us far and wide, which makes it all the more important to ensure that we can enjoy them by looking after our eyes, and getting them tested regularly,” said Nisha Merchant, UK Senior Product Manager for PreserVision.

The PreserVision survey was conducted to coincide with ‘World Sight Day’1, which takes place on 9th October 2008, and this year will focus on the ageing eye and fighting vision impairment in later life.

80% of blind people are over the age of 50, and with the world’s ageing population, eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and Age-related Macular degeneration (AMD) – the UK’s leading cause of blindness, affecting up to five million people in the UK alone – are all on the increase.

But according to World Sight Day statistics, three quarters of blindness is needless, and could be prevented, treated or cured. This includes AMD, for which the landmark 10 year eye health study, AREDS2 found that the antioxidant supplement, PreserVision, could be effective in preserving eye health in those susceptible to age-related changes.

The two-a-day PreserVision Soft Gels are available in two easy-to-swallow formulations – Original and Lutein. PreserVision Original provides high levels of the antioxidants beta-carotene3, vitamins C and E and zinc. PreserVision Lutein is an advanced formulation containing the same combination of vitamins C, E and zinc, but with lutein as a replacement for beta-carotene3, making the supplement suitable for smokers.

PreserVision Original and Lutein Soft Gels are available over the counter at most optometrists and pharmacies priced at £14.95 (RRP) for 60 Soft Gels. For further information about Bausch & Lomb’s PreserVision, log on to preservision.co.uk.
