New site helps expectant mums who fear money issues

27th January 2009 Print
Nearly a third (31%) of first time expectant mums are more scared about not having enough money for their new baby than they are about physically giving birth, according to MoneyforMums.co.uk, a new financial website for mums.

One in four believe they will have to pay out more than £2,500 in the first year and yet fewer than half (46%) of mums have been able to make any savings in preparation for parenthood. What's more with only 8% of the pregnant mums planning to return to work full time it is not surprising that finances are a growing concern for mums-to-be in the current climate.

The research also highlights that nearly half (45%) of expectant mums are overwhelmed by the amount of information they are expected to know and a further 28% are not clear of what benefits they are entitled to, meaning that they are potentially missing out on extra financial help available to them.

To help remove the financial fear factor, specialist provider of family financial products Family Investments has launched MoneyforMums.co.uk, a one-stop-shop to help mums budget and plan for the monetary aspects of having a baby.

Kate Baker, head of family savings at MoneyforMums said: ‘Planning for a birth and child's future can be an overwhelming experience with so many different aspects to think about. While there is plenty of advice available about health and nutrition for pregnant women, there is nowhere to go for unbiased information on financial matters. MoneyforMums aims to make the financial side of having a baby easier by providing all the practical information mums need, from their maternity rights and the kind of support they should expect from their employer to the state benefits that they and their child are entitled to.'

MoneyforMums.co.uk is easy to use, with simple tools to help expectant mums create a budget, work out childcare costs or discover what benefits they're entitled to. Expectant mums can also register for an e-newsletter, which provides timely financial information and reminders through each stage of their pregnancy and early motherhood.
