Why work is a pain in the neck

A massive three quarters (72%)* of people sit at a computer on a daily basis. What’s more, although it’s recommended people should take short breaks from their computer regularly, over a third (35%) spend more than two hours at a computer without taking any time out from looking at the screen or stretching their legs.
This is despite the fact that more than half (54%) of us say continuous computer use makes them feel uncomfortable.
The study from Nurofen reveals that whilst people spend a considerable amount of time chained to their computers, additional gadget-related grief abounds in other areas too. Nearly half (46%) of the people surveyed dedicate more than five hours a week glued to them, leading one in five (20%) to complain of blurry vision. Three quarters (76%) of people feel frustrated with their gadgets and throw ‘technology tantrums’.
Dr Rosemary Leonard, one of the UK’s foremost media doctors said: “The need for speed in life has made people rely more and more on modern-day gadgets. However, we have to weigh up the effect these devices are having on our health.”
The findings reveal that modern technology over-use is prompting two in five (38%) people to complain of a splitting headache, whilst an aching back (34%), sagging shoulders (32%) and sore neck (28%) are also common. Despite this, nearly three quarters (72%) simply accept these gadget-related pains as part of day-to-day life.
“The time spent slouched in front of the computer is leading to so-called “computer curvature”, while stress, headaches and assorted other aches and pains are also common,” Rosemary Leonard said. “We should really be making sure we are using them correctly and thinking of the long-term implications before spending hours with the latest gizmo. There are a few gentle exercises we can all do to help ease the effects of today’s technology. If in doubt, a pain relief tablet is a good short-term option, however always visit your doctor if the problem persists.”
