Vintage Fly-In and Air Display gathers the crème of pre-1967 aircraft
Amongst the many aircraft in attendance and displaying in the West Sussex skies will be the Great War Display Team, buzzing around in an exhilarating dogfight, recreated in First World War Sopwith and Fokker biplanes and tri planes.
Contrasting with these small yet excitingly agile aircraft will be a huge Douglas DC-6A Cloud master, the legendary 1950s airliner which is widely regarded as the best piston-engined commercial aircraft. The 1958-built example at Goodwood – call sign Sierra Alpha – has had a long career flying all over the world, and more recently has had a cameo role in 007’s Casino Royale film.
In addition to the many pre-1967 aircraft in the air and on the ground, the Goodwood Aero Club Vintage Fly In and Air Display will also offer plenty of other attractions to entertain not only the avid aviation enthusiast, but also all members of the family. These will range from a display of classic motorcycles and remote control model aircraft, to a large retail market, go-karts, archery, skid pan, funfair, static display of gliders, children’s play area, Scale Electrics, model car racing, static military vehicles.
The 2008 Goodwood Aero Club Vintage Fly-In and Air Display is in its third year and set to be the best yet with four hours of air display’s planned for each day, with all event visitors given the chance to get up close to the pioneering and evocative aircraft from the golden age of flying.
Advanced entry tickets are now on sale via the Goodwood Ticket Sales office, on 01243 755055. Admission is only £15 in advance, or £20 on the gate, with children 12 years old or under admitted for free. A weekend ticket in advance will cost £25. For an extra £3 will be charged for all visitors to ‘walk the line’ of the vintage aircraft display. The Goodwood Aerodrome will be open between 08:00 to 18:30 on both days, and all aircraft owners are invited to ‘fly-in’ in vintage clothing.
The Goodwood Aerodrome is located at the former RAF Westhampnett, a key Battle of Britain airfield in West Sussex. Today the site includes the world famous Goodwood Motor Circuit, the sympathetically-restored race track that hosts the nostalgic Goodwood Revival meeting every autumn (19-21 September 2008); an event that also includes a breathtaking aviation element, in addition to a spectacular array of cars and motorcycles, with star drivers and riders on hand to thrill the crowds.
The Goodwood Aero Club offers enthusiasts the opportunity to indulge their passion for aviation and flying and be part of Goodwood’s rich aviation history.
