Keeley’s Clunk-Click call-up

23rd April 2008 Print
Glamour model Keeley Hazell should endorse road safety campaigns in the UK, according to a survey launched by newcarnet.co.uk to coincide with the 25th anniversary of seatbelt wear becoming law. Users of the motoring website chose the 21-year-old ahead of England football star Steven Gerrard and Formula 1 ace Lewis Hamilton.

With almost 4 million motorists still not wearing a seatbelt, newcarnet.co.uk launched the poll after calling for celebrities to endorse road safety in the way that stars such as Kevin Keegan, Alvin Stardust and Sir Jimmy Savile did in the 1970s and 80s.
Back then, famous names helped slogans such as “Be Smart, Be Safe” and “Clunk, Click, every trip,” become engrained in British language.

Keeley was favoured by 28 percent of those polled while Steven Gerrard, whose England team-mates Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole were recently spotted driving without seatbelts while talking on mobile phones, was close behind on 25 percent. Lewis Hamilton, who last year received a driving ban for speeding in France, came third on 18 percent.

Results of newcarnet.co.uk’s poll

Keeley Hazell 28%
Steven Gerrard 25%
Lewis Hamilton 16%
Amy Winehouse 10%
Jimmy Savile 5%
David Hasselhoff 4%
David Tennant 4%
Fearne Cotton 3%
Ant & Dec 3%
Noel Edmonds 2%

“For very different reasons, the public admire celebrities like these, so they really could have the ability to help to change opinions and save lives,” said newcarnet.co.uk’s Massimo Pini. “If Keeley was to tell van drivers to belt up it could have much more of an effect than the scare tactics currently used in road safety campaigns.”
