Retirement home gets residents digging with a new garden

25th August 2009 Print
Residents at a care home in Reigate are digging for victory again with a £10,000 garden designed to keep them young at heart. A sensory garden, meadow, fountain and back-friendly raised borders will be unveiled this Saturday at Priors Mead Retirement Home, Reigate.

The lawned garden has been transformed into a sensory paradise which will stimulate residents’ minds and bodies. Structured walkways will allow people of all levels of mobility to explore the green space, while raised flowerbeds will allow the more active residents to grow their own flowers, fruits and vegetables.

“The garden really helps to stimulate the residents,” says Peter Granstrom, head of the residential home.

“Being outside for more of the day helps them stay alert and also sleep better.

“And we have made sure they can become as involved as they want to be, with raised flowerbeds designed specifically so they can do a bit of gardening of their own.”

The garden will be officially opened on Saturday, August 29 from 3pm.
