7th March 2007 Print
Samantha Morton The Whitechapel and Hogan are delighted to announce the cast for the unique Art Plus Drama event. Actors Emilia Fox, Rhys Ifans, Martine McCutcheon, Samantha Morton, Natalie Press, Greta Scacchi and Christopher Simon will perform specially commissioned scripts created by leading international artists Fiona Banner, Jenny Holzer, Ed Ruscha and Mark Titchner.

Dramatically staged in the Whitechapel’s spaces this exciting creative collaboration will result in performances that will be the highlight of an evening not to be missed.

Art Plus celebrates the flashpoints between art and other cultural forms in an exceptional one-off event. The Whitechapel’s Director, Iwona Blazwick, and Art Plus Drama Party Chairs, Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst and Tom Hollander along with the committee of leading figures from the arts, design, fashion, film and music, invite guests to an extraordinary evening of live performance, film and music to raise funds for the Whitechapel’s Education programme.

Ed Ruscha’s Public Notice, 2007, is a topical and comic rendition of all the items that are banned from airports as read by air hostesses. Jenny Holzer’s powerful monologues Broken Jaw and Midtown Massacre, 2007, are direct translations from declassified government documents of an incident in the Iraq war between an American solider and an Iraqi torture victim.

Fiona Banner’s Mirror, 2007, calls upon an actress to perform a written description of themselves as if they were nude, playing on desires and fantasies as well as fears of exposure. Mark Titchner’s Ur Text. Her Text, 2007, is an avant garde and Modernist call to revolution composed of fragments from various manifestos.

Leading designer Peter Saville created the party invitation. DJs Dave Dorrel, Howie B, and Trevor Jackson, Craig Richards, Dan Lywood, Andy Weatherall will play live sets, while Mourad Mazouz of Sketch and Gary Fairfull are curating the soundtrack for the lounge bar. Event designers Urban Caprice with St John Bread & Wine, Momo’s and Wright Brothers Oysters are creating a special party menu.

Art Plus Drama Party 2007 has been made possible through the generous support of Hogan, Italian luxury brand, who are proud to support this unique collaboration between the worlds of the visual arts, as well as film and theatre.

The annual Art Plus Party raises vital funds for the Whitechapel Gallery’s ongoing commitment to the wider community through its Education programmes that work with over 3,000 children and 30 diverse community groups each year.

By buying tickets at £95 each, individuals support the Whitechapel’s Education work and enjoy one of the highlights in London’s art calendar.
