Billie Piper To Star As Call Girl In TV Drama

16th March 2007 Print
ITV’s drama team, with ITV2, has commissioned new drama Belle De Jour, a contemporary eight part series starring Billie Piper as a London call girl. Taken from the best-selling, real life diaries, this is an eye opening insight into the life of an upmarket escort.

In stark contrast to her most recent television roles as Austen heroine Fanny Price in ITV’s adaptation of Mansfield Park and the lead in the BBC’s Victorian drama Ruby in the Smoke, Billie will take on the role of the very modern Belle de Jour.

Billie, who is currently starring in Treats in London’s West End, says: “This is such a brilliant opportunity to play a fascinating, strong, modern day character.”

Belle de Jour published her diaries in 2005 and, despite many attempts to discover her true identity, remains anonymous. Her no-holds-barred account of her experiences as a prostitute is frank, funny and highly compelling. This is the story of a 21st-century Moll Flanders, an illuminating glimpse behind the scenes of the high-class sex-trade.

It is also as an insight into the secret life of an extraordinary young woman whose real name is Hannah; who has an adored best mate, Nick; a conventional, married sister; and a mum and dad. None of whom have any idea that she is leading a double life.

ITV’s Director of Television Simon Shaps, said today: “It’s a sign of our confidence and ambition for ITV2 that we have commissioned an original piece of drama starring Billie Piper exclusively for the channel.”

Controller of ITV2, Zai Bennett, said: “ITV2 is all about brand new, exclusive, young programming so we’re absolutely delighted that Billie has agreed to star as Belle in our first ever unique drama. Both Billie and Belle are perfectly matched to ITV2’s young audience.”
