Celebrity Wife Swap Returns

2nd April 2007 Print
Wife Swap, the BAFTA-award winning hit series, is back with a celebrity swap. Debbie McGee, wife of magician and entertainer-extraordinaire Paul Daniels, swaps places with outspoken radio presenter Vanessa Feltz.

Singer Ben Ofoedu and Vanessa are enjoying a whirlwind romance. Ben is ten years younger than Vanessa, and after four and a half months of dating he has just asked her to marry him. As Ben says to the reporters at one of the celebrity events they attend, "we're celebrating love at the moment". Mother of two Vanessa says she's astonished by her new relationship. "Ben is the most extraordinary gentleman, and the fact that he noticed me is completely mind-boggling, it didn't occur to me in a million years that he could fancy me."

Six mornings a week, Vanessa's hard at work hosting BBC London's most popular radio phone in with a loyal audience of over 300,000 listeners - but what her audience doesn't know is that she's partying equally hard too. She's not only going to media events, but to the nightclubs where Ben's in demand to perform his 1999 dance hit "Turnaround".

While Vanessa and Ben love being in the heart of London, Paul and Debbie retreated from city life over 11 years ago and now live in a hamlet near Henley-on-Thames. They enjoy the quiet of country life - and being alone with each other. In contrast to Vanessa and Ben, the Daniels' don't attend many celebrity events, and Debbie is now putting her energy into her new business venture, her modelling agency, that she manages from her home office. Having been Paul's assistant in his magic show, Debbie also takes a traditional role in the home - all the cleaning and cooking is done by her - and her home is pristine.

When these couples swap partners and lives, Debbie has to cope with late nights and early mornings where she's hosting a radio show in which she's juggling callers, station idents and her lack of sleep. Ben whisks her off to a nightclub and invites celebrity friends round in his determination to "give her a taste of what it's like to be a celebrity right now, it's just about being seen, being pictured and being in all those glossy magazines".

Meanwhile, it's not just the quiet life in Henley-on-Thames that Vanessa is getting on with - it's the fact that Paul seems to show no interest in her whatsoever. She asks him questions, but he asks her nothing about her life at all. It's not until he asks her to put her confrontational attitude aside that Vanessa is finally able to have a heart-to-heart with Paul. He's twenty years older than Debbie, and Vanessa seeks his advice on how to cope with age-gap relationships. Keeping up with a 34-year-old musician is, she admits, "exhausting".

Week two sees both Debbie and Vanessa stamping their marks on the others household with their own set of rules and with the new regime comes some surprising and insightful moments as both couples struggle to adapt.

Celebrity Wife Swap, Sunday evenings, Channel 4.
