Cerys Matthews speaks to GMTV
Cerys Matthews spoke to GMTV’s Kate Garraway this morning, from her hotel in Queensland, Australia.Kate Garraway: One person alone will emerge as King or Queen of the jungle. Sadly, that person won’t be Cerys Matthews, but she’s still a winner with us. Look at her there! Still smiling this morning. You were beaming as you crossed that bridge last night and I bet you haven’t stopped smiling since?
Cerys Matthews: I think it was the right day for me to go out yesterday. I was ready to see my children, ready to get ready for the party which we’re going to have - the wrap party - and then fly home to the UK and see all my friends and family. Thanks to everyone who voted for me so I could stay in for this long, it was absolutely brilliant.
KG: You did brilliantly and you stayed in pretty much all the way. We did wonder though, back here there was an awful lot of fuss over you and Marc Bannerman. Are you surprised that he wasn’t there to greet you?
CM: I was a little surprised because I had a letter saying that he might come and greet me. But actually I think it’s probably a very good idea. Things in the jungle are so intense, your emotions are really raw and I really just want to relax, see to my kids who are amazing and gorgeous and get home safely and take things real slow.
KG: But did you have a soft spot for him because it looked to us as if you did?
CM: Well he’s a very sweet guy!
KG: She’s staying very quiet! Would you like to see him again? Don’t worry, we haven’t got him waiting in the wings, we’re not going to surprise you.
CM: Yeah, definitely but I mean right now it’s still my first day out of the jungle so I’m still in a kind of whirlwind. I’m just eating chocolate and tasting Doritos and all the food I haven’t tasted and looking in full length mirrors and having hot baths. I’m just surrounded by paper and crayons with my kids and it’s still really hectic.
KG: I bet it’s lovely to have a bit of chocolate and luxury. But let me just ask you a little bit more about Marc only because there was such a fuss made about the fact he had a girlfriend here, and since then he’s moved out of their home. A lot of people were saying ‘Ooh, she’s a relationship wrecker.’ We at GMTV I have to say, were saying ‘That’s so unfair’, it’s nothing to do with you. Did you feel any sense of that? Did he tell you that he had a girlfriend of two years?
CM: Well first of all we’re 11 people in a really intense situation. In all innocence, we were getting on really well as friends, it was me, Anna, Mark. He was friendly to everybody, he was really generous, wanted to help everybody out. And the moment when our friendship was getting a little bit intense, we pulled back a little because we didn’t want hurt anybody.
KG: So you knew that he had a girlfriend? That’s what made you slow it down a bit?
CM: Yes, of course.
KG: Well enjoy your time out of the jungle. What are you going to be doing over the next couple of days then?
CM: I’m going to be gunning for Mr. Biggins to become the first Queen man of the jungle, that’s what I’m going to be doing! You should see him! He’s so distinguished now, he’s got a beard, he’s lost about five million stone, he’s got a six pack, well, he’s got a one pack anyway. He’s just going ‘Oh my god I’ve made it into the final three!’ It’s so exciting to see him. He just brought sunshine to our lives in the camp.
KG: Are you going to sing ever again? I’d like to hear that.
CM: Hey, you have to shut me up, I’m always singing! If you want me to sing for you, just ask, any time.
KG: Great to talk to you this morning and well done for getting so far.
CM: Thanks, I had the most amazing experience of my whole life, it was brilliant.
