Sweet Soul Music

26th January 2007 Print
In 1957 a Memphis-based bank clerk named Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle launched what would become one of the most important record labels in the history of soul music. Fifty years on, the foundation of the Stax record label is to be celebrated with Sweet Soul Music - a major new show that will tour the UK from February 2007.

Developed by the producers of hit West End shows Dancing in the Streets and The Rat Pack – Live from Las Vegas, Sweet Soul Music promises spectacle, amazing production and above all incredible music that faithfully celebrates the greatest hits from Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke, Arthur Conley, Ben E King, Carla Thomas, Percy Sledge, Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd, James Brown, Booker T & The MG’s and many more.

Directed by award winning director Keith Strachan, Sweet Soul Music is based on the sensational Stax Revue with musical arrangements in the style of Booker T and the MGs and the legendary Memphis Horns, played by the show’s own “SSM Band and Horns” together with a full company of incredible singers.

The show has added significance as it marks exactly 40 years since the first ever Stax / Atlantic UK Tour, where British music fans saw - for the first time – the astonishing live power of Sam & Dave, Booker T & The MGs, Carla Thomas and the great Otis Redding. In 2007 Sweet Soul Music celebrates that excitement with a musical journey featuring all the classic hits including “Respect”, “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay”, “Mustang Sally”, “You Send Me”, “Stand By Me”, “When a Man Loves a Woman”, “Soul Man”, “Knock on Wood”, “I Feel Good”, “Midnight Hour” and of course “Sweet Soul Music”.
