Metallica To Headline At Wembley Stadium

19th March 2007 Print
As part of their ‘Sick of the Studio 07’ Summer Tour, Metallica, today announced a Wembley Stadium show on Sunday 8th July, The ‘Sick of the Studio 07’ tour is intended to give the members of Metallica a brief hiatus from the rigors of recording their new album, due for release in 2008.

“Sometimes we get a little tired of staring at the same four walls of the recording studio, as well as the same faces that inhabit the studio day in and day out, and we need to get out and just PLAY!” said Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. “This tour gives us a chance to stretch out a bit and jam in front of real fans.

Added the band’s James Hetfield, “Metallica have a history of needing to escape from the studio during the long recording process, and it’s always worked out well for us. Getting out on the road for a few weeks lets us feed off of the energy from the live crowds and take it back into the studio with us.”

On playing the new Wembley, Lars Ulrich had this to say, “Like just about any aspiring rock musician, we always dreamed of someday headlining the marquee venues around the world, such as Madison Square Garden, Candlestick Park (in our hometown of SF) Budokan, the LA Coliseum…and of course, Wembley Stadium. Any band who denies wanting to be up on that stage in front of that many fans is just bulls*%#*ing you.”

Since they formed in 1981, San Francisco Bay Area band Metallica have gone from an underground heavy metal band to one of the most successful acts in the world, with an intensely loyal fan base.

Sales of Metallica’s albums (including 8 studio albums, and one e.p.) total over 95 million copies worldwide, and have earned gold and/or platinum certifications in over forty countries. Their "Black album" has earned the prestigious RIAA Diamond Award (for sales of 10 million copies in the U.S.).

Metallica have garnered numerous awards and accolades throughout the world over their career, including 7 Grammy Awards, 2 American Music Awards, 2 MTV Video Music Awards, a VH-1 Award, the ESPN Action Sports and Music Artist Contribution Award for 2001, over 30 California Music Awards, the 2004 NARAS San Francisco Governor’s Award, the MTV: ICON award of 2003 and most recently, the ASCAP Creative Voice award for 2004.

The documentary film, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, 3 1/2 years in the making and directed by acclaimed filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in February 2004. It was released theatrically in July 2004. By the end of the year, SKOM was nominated for several critics choice awards and appeared on many “Top 10 films of the year” lists. The film won “Best Documentary” at the 2005 Independent Spirit Awards.

When it comes to touring, there are few, if any, bands who deliver live the way Metallica do. Their shows, which began in clubs and garages in the early eighties, are now selling out in arenas and stadiums throughout the world, and continue to be among the most intense, powerful and visually stimulating concert experiences ever delivered.

The most impressive achievement that bears mentioning is the fact that Metallica continue to be a strong attraction in the touring world; a truly rare feat in today’s mercurial entertainment business, where fans often change allegiance to bands as often as they do hairstyles.

Metallica are a band whose success can be directly attributed to a passion and no-compromise attitude in every project they undertake and this special Wembley Stadium show will demonstrate just that.
