Womad Festival introduces Drum n Bass event

6th March 2008 Print
Regarded as one of the most eclectic festivals in the world, WOMAD has become even more diverse with the introduction of a Drum n Bass event on Saturday 26 July. A new addition to WOMAD for 2008, this 2,000 capacity marquee will see some of the world’s most influential drum n bass artists take to the decks.

WOMAD aims to give festival-goers of all ages a greater choice of entertainment, whether this be food, music, dance or just relaxing with the family. The Charlton Park site will offer this and more in 2008. The addition of the drum n bass event will have the likes of Roni Size & Reprazent bringing a new dynamic to the festival, whilst keeping the unique essence and atmosphere that WOMAD has become loved for over its 26 year history.

Billed as Beat Bristol, the Saturday evening session will match two local Bristol heroes Roni Size and DJ TC (who is one of the most exiting upcoming DJ’s in drum n bass) against some of Brazil’s finest drum n bass DJ exports, DJ Patife and DJ Andy with MC Stamina in support.

Artistic Director Thomas Brooman points out that “After 26 years in the UK festival field, a whole generation has grown up embracing WOMAD as normal and a cool festival experience. More than ten thousand children and teenagers come to WOMAD each year, and this audience will embrace having drum n bass next to strange stuff from countries most of us would struggle to locate on the map! WOMAD has always been about diversity, discovery and surprises and this year we predict all three!”

WOMAD have already announced an array of exciting acts, which has included some of the biggest names in world music including, the legendary Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry (UK), Rumberos de Cuba (Cuba), Monajat Yulchieva (Uzbekistan) and Sa Ding Ding (Peoples Republic of China).

Organisers are excited to announce the following acts will also be playing at the WOMAD Festival 2008; Asere (Cuba), Mavis Staples (USA), Mor Karbasi (Palestine), Irish Ceilidh Session featuring Sharron Shannon, Damien Dempsey, Shane McGowan and guests (Ireland), Little Feat (USA), Show of Hands (UK), SudMM (Sicily).
