Don't Let Tom Cruise Ruin Your Marriage

29th November 2006 Print
Tom Cruise If you are planning a dream wedding – be warned – doing a ‘Tom and Katie’ could seriously ruin your health, wealth and future happiness. British brides might dream of a fairytale wedding but opting for a Hello-style blow out can end your future chances of happiness. That’s the message from UK Wedding Planner of the Year, Tamryn Kirby, who warns that ‘Celebrity Wedding Overload’ can cause serious friction, even before you’ve walked down the aisle.

Tamryn warned: “By loading yourself up with debt from the start you are adding a potential time bomb to your marriage.

Everyone sees the designer goodies that the A-listers have and they think they need all these expensive things to somehow make their wedding ‘special’.”

TomKat’s lavish Italian wedding had to cater for more than 250 global A-listers. Blushing bride Katie Holmes is rumoured to have spent $3,000 on wedding lingerie alone.

One in ten UK couples admitted to taking on a part-time job to pay for their celebrity-style wedding, and in a recent survey by TK Weddings, 53 percent said they would be over budget.

Tamryn said: “Celebrity culture seems to have sounded the death knell for traditional weddings. Celebrities are often concerned that their wedding will be remembered for the extravagant trimmings than the romance and they can afford to splash out. It’s very different for the other 99.99% of brides who don’t have bulging bank accounts and magazine deals.”

The same survey saw just 26 percent of brides hoping guests would remember how in love they were; more than half wanted to be remembered for how original the wedding was. “Copying celeb weddings isn’t a good plan – it leads to spiralling costs and it means nothing. If brides and grooms think about what makes them special as a couple and incorporate that, they’re onto a winner,” said Tamryn “What’s wrong with being an ordinary person having an extraordinary day? Absolutely nothing – and I can guarantee that couples will feel better when they’re not dreading the post honeymoon credit card bill!”

Celebrity Wedding Overload is also contributing to the rise in Post Nuptial Depression here in the UK. As couples have spent the months in the lead up to their wedding living the high life, it’s often back to earth with a real bang after the honeymoon and lots of brides find themselves suffering from depression when they should be revelling in married life. It’s a fact – celebrity weddings aren’t good for you!
