The WAG is over: beware the BAG

It's official: WAGs are now being replaced by a new type of man, the BAG (Boyfriend and Gold-digger). Research released today by Scottish Widows reveals that almost twice as many men than women would now consider marrying someone purely for money and a luxurious lifestyle, with nearly one in five men (19 per cent) admitting to harbouring gold-digging fantasies.

By contrast, only one in ten women would consider marrying for money (11 per cent), and women are now concerned about becoming SWAGs (Successful Wife and Girlfriend) with financial independence and career success. As more and more women in famous celebrity couples start to earn their own money and fame, two thirds of women (67 per cent) in the UK now believe that it is important that they have their own money, while three quarters (76 per cent) say that they don't rely on their partner to take the lead when it comes to finances.

The research also reveals that gold-diggers are more likely to consist of the younger generations: only eight per cent of the over 65 age group say they would consider marrying someone just for money, in contrast to 13 per cent of the 45-54 age group and 19 per cent of the under 24s.

Mike Hoban, Customer and Brand Marketing Director, says: "Our research shows that the tide is turning with so many men willing to be financially dependant on their partner, but it's good to see the surge in women taking responsibility for their own financial future. It's more important now than ever to be financially independent so that you don't end up in money trouble, so saving and preparing for the future is the most important goal. It is vital that we are financially savvy, whatever our lifestyle and whether we are in a relationship or not."
