The wedding wonders of the world

18th August 2008 Print
Peaches Geldof has just got hitched in one of the top 10 dream wedding spots according to Halifax Travel Insurance. With the recent news of Las Vegas hosting the happy event, popularity of the dream wedding destination is expected to increase even further.

Research from the travel insurance provider asked over 2,000 people nationwide where in the world they would most like to get hitched, with the US gambling capital coming in 4th as a top hot spot. Even more interesting was the unlikely choice of choosing to get hitched at Disneyland. Twice as many men opted to tie the knot with Walt Disney as their witness than women, supporting the theory that the park really does 'make dreams come true' for some.

Vicky Watson, spokesperson for Halifax Travel Insurance, said: "Destination weddings are increasing in popularity as the likes of Coleen and Wayne and now Peaches and her husband opt for such a thing. The choice of location both of these celebrity couples made, featured in our research proving that a wedding abroad is something many of us think and dream about.

"Las Vegas has a huge kitsch appeal as a wedding venue - and the thought of getting married in a 24-hour drive thru chapel by an Elvis Presley look-alike clearly appeals to some people. With recent pictures of wild child Peaches Geldof getting married there, the location is likely to increase in popularity amongst party loving partners wanting to tie the knot."

With factors such as the unpredictability of British weather and high prices sometimes associated with having a traditional wedding in the UK, many couples are looking abroad to plan their weddings. Other reasons for this may be down to the large number of overseas hotels and venues that offer competitive wedding packages; hotels and venues abroad are increasingly offering the services of in-house wedding co-ordinators, which can make the job of arranging a wedding a much more pleasant and stress-free experience for the bride and groom-to-be.

Vicky Watson, spokesperson for Halifax Travel Insurance, added: "Destination weddings are comparable to planning a holiday overseas and it is important to consider travel insurance as a mandatory aspect in the wedding preparations. The bride and groom may also want to consider taking out the additional cover that specialist wedding insurance providers can offer, while guests travelling abroad will need to ensure they have a travel policy that includes cover for loss of baggage.

"Delays in flights and loss of luggage holding expensive items such as wedding outfits can cause havoc, and heartache, for couples on their way to getting married. It is important that a comprehensive travel insurance policy is taken out prior to leaving the UK, so that everyone can be confident that they will arrive at the wedding destination ready for the big day."

Halifax Travel Insurance offers optional additional cover for lost, stolen or damaged personal baggage up the value of £1,500 per person which also includes £200 compensation for baggage delays.
