1 out of 10 Brits cheated on their partner last summer

trivago, the European online travel community asked visitors in their latest survey what crimes they would confess to during their summer holiday. The survey was answered by 4,773 users and revealed that 11 per cent of British vacationers cheated on their partner.

Are the memories of the steamy summer affair starting to fade? According to the results of a trivago survey conducted among English, German, French, Spanish and Italian travellers, 36 per cent of Brits are guilty of carrying out a dirty deed during their summer holiday.

11 per cent of the British survey respondents admit to having cheated on their partner whilst they were on holiday. Six per cent stole something from the hotel, five per cent took drugs and three per cent smuggled something home. Five per cent admitted to driving drunk, the same percentage were impolite to locals. However, only one per cent of Brits came clean about leaving a bar or restaurant without paying.

Abroad, an average of 41 per cent of respondents had something to get off their chest. Over half of the French (53 per cent) went home with a guilty conscience. The amount of respondents that admitted to taking drugs was particularly high (23 per cent).

The Spaniards found it the hardest to be faithful, with 17 per cent straying. The Italians could not resist taking a souvenir from the hotel, 11 per cent were guilty of stealing something. The Germans admitted to the least misdemeanors; however they are more inclined than the Brits to cheat on their partner (14 per cent).

The online survey was answered by 4,773 visitors to trivago throughout October 2008.
