Majority of motorists against new ‘parking tax’

The vast majority of British drivers have rejected the idea of workplace charging according to a new survey by Motorpoint.

The poll by the country’s leading car supermarket group found that over two thirds of motorists (78%) were against the idea of having to pay any sort of levy to park their vehicle at work. Only 21% agreed with the idea.

This news follows controversial plans announced in the East Midlands by Nottingham City Council to introduce a so-called ‘parking tax’ by 2010. If given the green light by the Government, motorists could find themselves forking out £185 a year (rising to £350 by 2014). Funds raised would reportedly be used to fund the extension of the city’s tram system.

Says David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint: “This new poll clearly demonstrates that the idea of charging people to pay to park their car at work is one step to far for the vast majority of motorists, particularly in the wake of recent hikes in petrol prices and forthcoming changes to road tax rates.”
