A Divine Chocolate Experience At Eden This Summer

23rd May 2007 Print
Fairtrade Chocolate Divine will be at Eden Project in Cornwall from half-term onwards, inviting visitors to find out all about the journey from bean to bar, and get actively involved in Fairtrade.

Divine, the farmer-owned Fairtrade chocolate company, will be running an interactive exhibition this summer at Eden Project, under the banner of Eden’s major exhibition on climate and environment conservation and sustainability ‘Towards the Edge’ (May 26th – Sept 2nd).

Divine, in partnership with its sister Fairtrade education charity Trading Visions, will be offering a colourful insight into the world of cocoa farmers in Ghana, an opportunity to see how cocoa is harvested and and get an insight into farmers’ lives, and the impact of Fairtrade.

Opening in time for half-term on May 26th, the display will enlarge from the first weekend of August onwards to include more interactive and children-focused opportunities– such as turning cocoa beans on a bamboo drying table, tasting Divine from a flowing fountain of chocolate, and logging on to support the young people’s Dubble Chocolate Challenge Manifesto.

During half-term the Divine exhibition will also be running workshops for children wanting to enter the DubbleClick competition – a fantastic opportunity to design your own computer game – and the chance to win a top game design company making your game for real! See www.dubbleclick.co.uk for details.

Divine Chocolate Ltd, which is co-owned by the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative on 45,000 farmers’ in Ghana, has collaborated regularly with Eden Project, organising popular children’s cocoa workshops and trails, and explaining how Fairtrade works. Eden Project is one of the only places in UK where cocoa is being grown, and in season, visitors can see the yellow rugby-ball shaped pods on the trees.

“The story of where chocolate comes from has a timeless fascination for children and adults alike.” says Louise Taplin, Trading Visions’ campaign manager. “The allure of chocolate is always uncomfortably at odds with how hard it is for cocoa farmers to make a living from growing its ingredients. At Eden this summer, we will be offering a great chocolate-filled experience, and the chance to get involved and find out more about how to ensure a fair deal for the farmers behind the nation’s favourite treat.”

Divine Chocolate Ltd is behind the Divine brand and Dubble, the crunchy Fairtrade chocolate with added Comic Relief. From the start both brands have undertaken pioneering educational projects with the aim of increasing understanding of trade issues, and the concept of Fairtrade amongst school children and students. These include the Papapaa DVD and Papapaa.org website (produced in partnership with Comic Relief) which are universally-used resources for teachers, the Divine Poetry Competition which schools nationwide enter each year (with Christian Aid), and the Chocolate Challenge Manifesto, a multimedia campaign created by young people demanding fairer trade, and adding signatures and support daily at Dubble.co.uk. All major education projects are now being devised and managed in partnership with new charity Trading Visions.

Eden Project supports Fairtrade and stocks Fairtrade products in its shops.
