Mich Turner launches Fantastic Party Cakes

Mich Turner, founder and director of London’s Little Venice Cake Company has launched her latest book – Fantastic Party Cakes - with a swish party at London’s Dorchester Hotel.

Mich and the Little Venice Cake Company team welcomed guests from the press, media, banqueting and showbiz world to the Crystal Room with a stunning array of exquisite cakes.

Her first book – Spectacular Cakes – was launched 2 years ago and Mich received a letter after the event congratulating her on a fabulous year, asking how she was ever going to top it!

It was true! It had been a fabulous year - having created David Beckham’s 30th Birthday Cake, designed and produced a special wedding cake featured in the hit movie Nanny McPhee starring Emma Thompson and Colin Firth; and produced after show party cakes for both X-Factor and Strictly Come Dancing.

But top it – they certainly did - in the following 12 months Spectacular Cakes went on to win the National Award for Best Dessert Book in the World Cookbook Awards and Mich was announced as the Harpers Bazaar and Chanel Entrepreneur of the Year. She filmed with the delicious James Martin and also found time to have a baby.

They have kept up the momentum in these last 12 months, tutoring Ant and Dec for their ITV1 Saturday Night Challenge to create a birthday cake for Sir Cliff Richard.

They made Gordon Ramsay’s 40th Birthday cake – which just happened to be on the same day as Mich’s elder son’s 4th birthday. There was immense pressure in the production kitchen that week – on one bench was Marlow Turner’s Chocolate Massey Ferguson Tractor – red please; and on the other, Gordon Ramsay’s 4 feet high chocolate sculpture with handmade Venetian gilded masks. Both boys were thrilled with their cakes, prompting Gordon to announce, “Mich is the Bentley of Cake Makers!” – a quote she has adopted for her new book.

In December, they made a birthday cake for X-Factor Judge Sharon Osbourne’s husband and lead singer of rock group, Black Sabbath – Ozzy Osbourne.

Little Venice Cake Company designed the entire new collection of wedding cakes for Marks and Spencer. Stuart Rose wrote to Mich just last week to say how fantastically well the wedding cakes were being received and how complimentary his food buyers were of Little Venice Cake Company and their work ethos.

In May Little Venice Cake Company had a complete rebrand, redesigned their website and launched their own range of cakes exclusively to Harvey Nichols. This range has been picked up by the press and received extremely favourable reviews and she has recently been approached by La Grande Epicerie in Paris.

And of course Mich Turner has produced Fantastic Party Cakes. She is extremely pleased with this book, featuring a stunning collection of pretty party cakes, teatime treats and fluffy desserts for all occasions. The book is published by Jacqui Small in the UK and Rizzoli in the USA and is available internationally. Jacqui toasted Mich at the launch party saying how privileged she was to work with her.

Mich is very excited and enthusiastic about the upcoming 12 months. Next week she will be in South Africa as part of the Good Food and Wine Show where she will be conducting a number of masterclasses and hands on workshops.

Meanwhile, back here away from the sunshine, the Little Venice Cake Company’s luxury Christmas cake slice will be launching as part of the Starbucks Christmas promotion. With 7% brandy per slice it is a perfect way to start the day - every day - on the run up to Christmas!

Harvey Nichols will be featuring an exclusive collection of Little Venice Cake Company Christmas cakes available throughout all their stores. Mich will be attending their special customer Christmas evening in December, to sign copies of her book and personalise Christmas cakes.

Mich revealed exclusively at the launch party, her third book has just been commissioned – work begins in December. This book – Couture Wedding Cakes – will feature a catwalk collection of the most breathtaking stylish cakes including the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Wedding cake. Designed and created to celebrate the 60th Wedding anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Mich and her husband, Phil are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary at a similar time, Mich quipped that she didn’t think they were going to have as elaborate a cake to celebrate their anniversary!

With articles she has written featuring in Observer Food Monthly, Radio 4 and both Anthony Worrall Thompson’s and James Martin’s seasonal magazines, it is no wonder James Martin says, “one of the best cake makers in the country, Mich deserves her place on the A list!”
