Small Organic Farm Business Enjoys Tesco Breakthrough
Well-known organic livestock farmer Helen Browning has secured listings in 300 Tesco stores for her organic Speedy Sausages. “We’ve sold almost 1,000 tonnes of these sausages in the past six years, from our glorious pigs, and I am delighted to be able to offer them to the millions who visit Tesco every day”, said Helen this week. “I think they will love them.”Absolutely perfect for families young and old, these ground breaking sausages cook in five minutes; are gluten free; and are made with 94% pork. “The pigs we use have the best free ranging conditions in the EU; it is a delight to work with them”, Helen added. “If we didn’t make sausages, or if the sausages didn’t sell, we wouldn’t keep the pigs”.
Tesco’s organic meat buyer, John Downes, says: “The Helen Browning brand has been around a long time. It has a proven track record and we think it will be popular with our customers. The organic sector saw rapid growth last year—over 30%--and we anticipate that the strong growth will continue”.
Helen Browning’s organic speedy sausages do not need any preservatives. They do not contain rusk or filler. The pigs do not eat any genetically modified feed. The sausages themselves are presented in a doubly-convenient split pack, with each side containing six sausages.
“It seems that people quite like them, finding them more-ish. It’s the combination of a smooth bite, a distinct spice mix and organic honey,” says her commercial manager Tim Finney. “Finger food hot and cold, plonked into some mash, add to Yorkshire pudding for a toad in the hole, dipped in mustard. We can supply about 100 different ways to eat them”.
The Helen Browning brand carries the distinctive orange pig logo which represents high animal welfare and simple, good food. The Helen Browning brand, which includes back and streaky bacon, has enjoyed consistent success over the past decade. Customers can also opt to have fresh organic meat delivered direct to their home or workplace. Helen Browning, who was awarded an OBE at the end of the nineties for her contribution to organic farming, established her home delivery service 20 years ago, way ahead of her time.
This year thousands of visitors will be served with Helen Browning’s products from its event food business – the Flying Pig – at events ranging from Lord’s Cricket to the Red Bull International Air Race that takes place in London on 28-29 July. Customers are invited to see Helen’s happy pigs for themselves at Eastbrook farm near Swindon. Her passion for good food has led her to take over the local pub – The Royal Oak in Bishopstone – so you will be assured of a great meal.
Organic Fortnight, a major national campaign organised by the Soil Association, takes place 1st – 16th September. The theme is 'Wake up to an Organic Breakfast'.
