Bacon is Brits’ favourite butty filling
An independent survey conducted by The Sandwich Factory, has revealed that bacon is the number one sandwich filling - although banana is not far behind. ‘The Great Scoff Sandwich Survey’, set out to discover the nation’s favourite sandwiches and more than 25 per cent voted bacon as a necessary filling for any shop bought sandwich.Bacon by itself, as part of a BLT or with chicken were favourite with men and women around the country.
Runners-up in the shop bought sandwich stakes included brie and cranberry, roast beef and horseradish and tuna and cucumber.
However, a greater surprise was that banana was revealed as the most consistently recommended ingredient for making sandwiches at home. Suggestions included banana with raspberry jam, chocolate, peanut butter or even cream cheese, walnut and honey.
Other recommended sandwich combinations for home included cheese and jam, sausage and marmalade, cheese with various flavours of crisps and ham with Philadelphia and pineapple.
The Great Scoff Sandwich Survey was carried out in conjunction with Scoff’s ‘What Sandwich Are You?’ competition (whatsandwich.co.uk), which asks participants to imagine they are a sandwich, then describe what kind of sandwich they would be and why. The most creative entries will be in the running to win a Nintendo Wii or an iPod shuffle.
Michael Price, from The Sandwich Factory said: “The survey produced some very interesting results, with regards to what people buy and what they are putting in sandwiches at home. In the last few years the sandwich industry has become aware that people are getting more and more adventurous with their sandwiches and this is reflected in the wide variety now available off the shelf.
“We take customer feedback very seriously and after analysing these results we are considering experimenting with banana fillings for our Scoff range, which already includes all the regular fillings, as well as more unusual ones such as king prawn and watercress.”
