A muesli with green credentials

Chocolate is often viewed as a naughty treat but the cacao plant, the seeds of which are used to make chocolate, is now classified as a superfood due to its high quantity of anti-oxidants. Combine the chocolaty taste from the cacao nibs with oat flakes, kamut flakes (an ancient wheat grain that provides a high quality source of protein), sultanas, crispy barley flakes, chopped dates, raw buckwheat, rye flakes, sunflower seeds, diced prunes and cashews, and you get something very special in your breakfast bowl.
But there’s more to this muesli than just good taste and healthy ingredients, it’s also about the health of the planet. Not only is the muesli organic, but as the first food company in the UK to go zero waste, absolutely nothing at Alara is thrown away, but instead is recycled in one way or another. So you know no waste has been producing in creating your breakfast when you tuck into a bowl of their muesli.
Likewise the packaging on the Date with Cacao Muesli (and the others mueslis in the ‘Into the Garden Range’) won’t be going to landfill either; packaged in recyclable boxing (cardboard from sustainable resources) and a bag made of Super-ECO film (Alara are one of only two companies to currently using this packaging)– it is completely biodegradable within 18 months.
Alongside this, Alara have turned large amounts of waste land around their London site into community gardens (removing over 40 tonnes of rubbish in the process), organic vineyards and permaculture growing spaces and have committed themselves to becoming carbon neutral by 2010. This dedication to the environment has led to Alara recently being named as ‘Green Company of the Year’ at the Fast Growth Business Awards and Alex Smith, the director, has just been named as a London Leader of Sustainability, given the job of encouraging others go green and help save the planet.
The muesli’s so environmentally friendly it could even turn the milk green!
