Boilers demystified

Homeowners beware
Boilers over 15 years old are often only around 60 per cent efficient (G rated or less), which means that for every pound spent on fuel, 40p is wasted.
Martyn Bridges, director of marketing and technical support at Worcester comments on the energy efficiency of condensing boilers:
“At Worcester, we recognise that updating your boiler to a modern condensing boiler can be a simple way to reduce fuel bills and improve the energy efficiency of your home. This is why our Greenstar range of gas and oil fired condensing boilers are all over 90% efficient and are A rated for efficiency, which means they are better for the environment as well as reducing fuel bills.”
The right heating system is an essential component in every home, which is why Worcester has the largest collection of gas and oil-fired condensing boilers in the U.K.
Boilers - get in the know
There are three main types of high-efficiency condensing boiler- the combination or ‘Combi’, the system and the regular. Each type delivers the benefits of high-efficiency technology, but is suitable for different types of homes.
Combination or ‘combi’ boilers heat your home and provide instant hot water without the need for a tank. Combi boilers are an increasingly popular choice in UK homes and in fact, account for well over half of all the new domestic boilers installed in Britain every year.
Regular boilers are suitable for homes with a traditional heating and hot water system. Unlike a combi, regular boilers work on the principle of stored water and require a separate hot water tank, which determines how many bathrooms can be supplied. Regular boilers require more space than either combi or system boilers as they often require an expansion tank in the loft.
System boilers also use stored water which allows them to feed several hot water taps at a time, making them ideal for large homes. In contrast to regular boilers, system boilers have most of their major components of the heating and hot water system built in, making them more efficient and less space consuming.
Worcester’s customer service and UK based technical team are on hand to discuss which type of boiler is most suited to your home’s needs. Worcester also takes the hassle out of finding a qualified and reputable installer in your local area, by having a useful ‘find an installer’ service on their website.
In addition to highly efficient condensing gas and oil boilers Worcester, Bosch Group are also leading suppliers of renewable technologies for the home - Greenstore ground source heat pumps and Greenskies solar hot water heating panels.
