The Government agency, which saw its 2 millionth personalised registration sale achieved in 2005, has seen a fourfold rise in the number of customers buying a special registration as a gift in the last five years.

Louise Pierpoint, marketing and publicity manager for DVLA Personalised Registrations commented: "We believe our website has had a considerable impact on the growth in gift purchases. It has made it simple and quick to find all kinds of number and letter combinations from the comfort of your own home. MR and MRS type plates are a good example of how you can use the current registration format and we are also finding growing interest in ‘his and hers’ plates, where both sets of couples’ initials are represented on one registration."
