GEM enjoys a boom after the media endorse its good service

One of Britain’s smaller motoring organisations, GEM Motoring Assist (GEM), that has less than 100,000 members is enjoying an unprecedented rate of public enquiries about its services thanks to the power of the media.

Just a few weeks ago an independent survey in the leading weekly motoring magazine Auto Express put GEM ahead by a very considerable margin of all other roadside assistance operators including the big household names like the AA, RAC and Green Flag.

GEM scored highly for value for money, friendliness and helpfulness, general presentation and overall service. Auto Express said GEM was the only operator to score more than four out of five in every sector. “This shows the size of a firm is not always an indicator of quality,” said the magazine.

But roadside assistance is only part of the GEM story. As a not for profit organisation it devotes much of its income to road safety matters and improving the environment for all road users.

It operates an informative web site (motoringassist.com) with a powerful array of links to other government and non-governmental organisations that are concerned with saving life and injury. It publishes an extensive range of free leaflets to help drivers, pedestrians, motorcyclists, pedal cyclists and women travelling alone. It finances research into road safety matters, campaigns and recognises those that work for road safety.

Chief Executive of GEM, David Williams said: “We are constantly striving to expand our membership in order to help support our road safety initiatives. Most important though, is our pledge to offer the very highest level of overall service regardless of how big or small we might be.”
