McLaren F1 No.1 supercar over a decade on
The McLaren F1 is the greatest supercar of all time, according to a new survey by CAR magazine. The poll of nearly two and a half thousand people showed that although the 90s were memorable for many reasons; bad hair, Britpop and brightly coloured clothes, the era produced one landmark creation that, a decade later, is still yet to be beaten – the mighty McLaren F1.The survey, which ran on carmagazine.co.uk gave enthusiasts plenty of choice, but it seems nothing could surpass the definitive supercar of the 90’s. The McLaren F1 topped the list of 25 cars from across the decades with 30% of the vote – twice as many as the runner-up, Ferrari’s F40. Back in 1994, no competitor car could touch the McLaren F1 road car. Designed by F1 legend Gordon Murray, it was a widely recognised triumph of British engineering, capable of 240mph, and 0- 60mph in just 3.2 seconds.
According to the survey by CAR magazine, the top ten supercars of all time are as follows:
1 McLaren F1
2 Ferrari F40
3 Bugatti Veyron
4 Ferrari 288 GTO
5 Lamborghini Countach
6 Lamborghini Miura
7 Porsche 959
8 Ferrari Enzo
9 Porsche Carrera GT
10 Porsche 911 Turbo
And perhaps the reason is they just don’t make them like they used to. The second part of the poll found that the 90s were the greatest supercar decade, with 31% of voters choosing the 90s above all other eras.
As the magazine that invented the word ‘Supercar’ back in the 1960’s when journalist LJK Setright used it to described the Lamborghini Miura, CAR magazine is celebrating nearly five decades of magnificent supercars gracing its pages. Which is why carmagazine.co.uk is launching a supercar microsite; featuring definitive facts, galleries and videos of the landmark supercars from each decade, plus the history of how supercars have evolved over the past 40 years.
And as if that’s not enough, CAR magazine’s September 2008 issue will include a free Supercars 2008 supplement, celebrating the best of the modern supercar with an exclusive head-to-head test of the new Lamborghini LP560-4 against the Ferrari F430.
