Morrisons cuts petrol prices

Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, comments on the latest move in the supermarket petrol price war as Morrisons yesterday announced a £0.02p cut.

This brings the cost at their 277 forecourts in the UK down to an average of 121.2p for diesel and 109.9p for unleaded:

"This is welcome news for Britain's 33 million motorists as all of the ‘Big 4' supermarket chains, which represent 38% of all fuel sales, have now cut petrol prices. Asda has dropped unleaded fuel costs for the second time to match Morrisons, while Tesco, with the most supermarket fuel courts, has pledged to match the cheapest petrol price in each local area. Sainsbury's is offering shoppers £0.05p off per litre for every £50 they spend.

"However, we can't ignore the fact that supermarket petrol stations only represent 12% of all forecourts in the UK and consumers could find themselves driving further to make these savings. Going forward, we hope to see this initiative replicated by large fuel companies. With oil prices beginning to fall, it is good to see these major retail players passing on savings to their consumers but are they doing enough to combat the 14% fuel price increase we have already felt this year?"
