Major regeneration project in Reading gets green light
Barratt has secured planning permission for The West Village, which will bring 435 contemporary new homes to Reading and complete the regeneration of the town centre.Sited in Oxford Road, in the heart of the town, the West Village will transform the area into a vibrant new living quarter that includes shops, bars, restaurants, workshops and offices.
“We are delighted to have won planning permission for this exciting scheme, which is the largest project in Reading since the development of the Oracle shopping and leisure centre,” comments Gary Ennis, Barratt regional managing director. “The West Village will bring much needed private and affordable housing to Reading in this fantastic cosmopolitan setting with plenty of ‘buzz’, which we expect will appeal hugely to a wide variety of home buyers.”
The West Village is being built on the site of the former Battle Hospital, which closed at the end of 2005; some of the existing buildings will be retained as hospital and nurses’ quarters for the new hospital. The wide choice of homes will comprise one and two-bedroom apartments and two, three and four bedroom houses, all created to a very high specification with exceptionally stylish interiors.
The homes will be set in beautifully landscaped grounds, with plenty of green spaces including a traditional village green. To add further to the sense of community, Barratt is creating a brand new community centre to replace the old centre that was housed in a former hospital building.
The West Village will be a superb place to live with everything on the doorstep: fantastic shopping at the Oracle, great bars, pubs and restaurants, exciting nightlife, and even Premier League football at the Madjeski stadium. For day-to-day shopping, a Tesco Superstore is being built adjacent to the development.
For commuters, Reading West station, with its short link to the Reading mainline, is just a short walk away and provides a very fast train service into London Paddington in 20 minutes. The M4 motorway at junction 13 is within a short drive.
Reading is close to some of the most beautiful rural areas of the county and close to Ascot, Henley, Wentworth and Windsor.
