Green with envy in Portishead

Green with envy in Portishead When buying items for a home, it's becoming more popular to use materials which reduce the impact on the environment. But how can a contemporary and stylish look be achieved while at the same time helping save the planet? Charles Church's new showhome at their Priory Walk development in Port Marine, Portishead has loads of inspiration.

Opening on Saturday 7th June, the showhome is designed by well-renowned interior designers Intu and utilises a carefully-selected range of materials, furniture, wallpaper and soft furnishings made from sustainable and recycled materials.

Melanie Miller, the designer, said: "I've taken inspiration from the natural world, bringing the outside world inside of the showhome. For the walls I've used textural coverings made from plant-base fibres hand-woven with dried grasses, fully-sustainable cork and natural dyes made from vegetables, spices and minerals."

Melanie continues: "The furniture is constructed from sustainable and recycled sources and includes a coffee table made from reclaimed moulded driftwood. The shelves and chairs in the study are made of compressed cardboard and the desk is made of driftwood and a recycled-glass top. The living room will have a bio-degradable sofa with a sun-dried, not kiln-dried, timber frame with natural fillings of wool and calico."

"The natural theme continues with the accessories, including cushion covers made from recycled linen and children's clothing, mirrors backed with recycled board and towels made of jute and linen, both of which are more sustainable than cotton. Floor coverings include carpets made from unbleached wool, with a jute backing and natural glues plus a marmoleum floor in the bathroom, which is made of crushed seeds and tree sap."

The inspiration continues to the children's bedrooms, where Melanie has been particularly inventive. One bedroom features a bed made from a reclaimed rowing boat on stilts as the centre piece, while the other has been inspired by Winnie the Pooh's 100-acre wood complete with curtains hanging off a real branch.

Plus, to keep things spic and span, all toiletries in the showhome are organic and plant-based while all the cleaning products will also be organic.

Just 12 miles from Bristol, Priory Walk in Port Marine consists of 35 four and five bedroom family homes created by well-established and respected developer Charles Church. All properties are constructed to a superior specification, with all the benefits of modern building techniques blended with traditional features and craftsmanship.

Plus, you'll be spoilt for choice with six housetypes to choose from. Each home is designed with the needs and demands of the modern family very much in mind and offers space and all the modern comforts.

Also, to additionally help reduce the impact on the environment, each house has a water butt, recycling bins and a rotary airer for the rear garden.

Priory Walk is in Port Marine, a brand-new marina development combining superb amenities and facilities, including waterside bars, cafes and restaurants and a leisure complex with a 25m pool, four-court sports hall and air-conditioned gym. Further facilities include two primary schools and a flagship Waitrose food store behind a new public piazza.
