Former Longford Estate set for ‘green’ new homes
A new development of ‘greener’ homes is to be built in Downton, Wiltshire, after an award-winning housebuilder acquired part of the Longford Estate.Redrow Homes has bought a picturesque site off Wick Lane, previously used for grazing, from the Trustees of the Longford Estate and plans to build 50 new environmentally-friendly homes, which go above and beyond the current building standards for sustainability.
The developer is proposing to build 33 new homes for open market sale in addition to 17 affordable properties on the site, which will all achieve level three of the Code for Sustainable Homes – two years ahead of targets set by the Government.
The area purchased already has outline planning consent and a detailed application is expected to be submitted by Redrow to Salisbury District Council in the coming weeks, with the housebuilder hoping to start building work at the site this summer.
The development, named The Glades, will have a completed value of approximately £20m.
Under the code, all new properties are graded on a scale of one to six, in terms of their impact on the environment. Each property is marked on nine separate categories, which take into consideration everything from energy efficiency to water usage.
Paul Backhouse, land director for Redrow Homes (Southern), said: “We are delighted to have acquired this excellent site and to be able to provide eco-conscious homebuyers in the South of England with comfortable homes in a fabulous area, that’s just a short drive from the edge of the New Forest National Park.
“We have chosen this site particularly for its prime location. It’s ideal for commuters with its close proximity to the towns of Salisbury, Southampton, Bournemouth and Poole, as well as the M27 and M3 motorway networks, but with the tranquillity of a National Park on its doorstep.
“It will be a development built for modern life in the 21st century and will suit a wide-range of homebuyers. Redrow is proud to be playing its part to help reduce carbon emissions and help homebuyers who want to live in a more sustainable community.
“We are always on the look out for new sites to develop so we can continue to expand the company’s portfolio of family homes, first time buyer properties and contemporary city centre schemes.”
Redrow’s properties in the South of England are among 5,000 new homes built each year across England, Scotland and Wales.
