5th September 2008 Print
Summer is safe as houses Young people attending the “Safe Summer” extended school sessions at The Albion High School in Salford were offered an unusual challenge. Miller Homes invited the Creative Arts Class students to enter a competition to design their ‘Eco Home of the Future’.

The competition was topical because Miller Homes is building a range of ‘Eco-Homes’ at its ‘Unity Quarter’ development on Oaklands Road, Kersal The award winning house builder recently organized a similar competition with years 8 and 9 at The Albion High School. The success of this competition led Joe Galleger, Director of Organisation, at the school to invite Miller Homes to repeat the competition for the extended school class, which caters for young people aged 8 plus over the holiday season.

The earlier success was repeated with 18 entries and all showed a good understanding of ‘green’ issues. Steve Price, Miller Homes Sales and Marketing Director said: “The challenge has shown the depth of understanding that young people have about houses of the future. The winning design, from 8 year old Sheldon Newbigging, featured rainwater harvesting, windmills, vegetable patches and solar cells. For someone so young this is remarkable, and well done to everyone who took part.”

The prize winners were:

1st Prize - Sheldon Newbigging
2nd Prize - Olivia Carroll
Two reams won third prizes:
Aaliyah Pritchard and Abbey Ward
Catlin Whittaker, Olivia Pritchard and Dayna Riley
