Knightstone Island scoops top honour
Knightstone Island has been named ‘best redevelopment' project in the UK at a prestigious national property awards for its sensitive restoration of three Grade II listed buildings.Redrow's unique new homes development in Weston-super-Mare was presented with the top ‘five star' award in the category of ‘Best Redevelopment' at the Daily Mail UK Property awards.
The Knightstone Island scheme, which is almost entirely surrounded by water, beat off completion from other short listed entries to pick up the prize at a gala ceremony in London.
Redrow has refurbished three Grade II Listed Buildings on the island - the Pavilion Theatre, Dr Fox's Bath House and the historic swimming baths - to create a range of 87 one, two and three-bedroom apartments and two commercial units set for restaurant / café use.
The island, which is linked to the mainland by a causeway, has long been a landmark in the resort but had fallen into a state of disrepair in recent years before Redrow's development gave it a new lease of life.
Peter Carpinelli, managing director for Redrow Homes (South West), said: "It's fantastic to win the top award and once again receive recognition of the highest order for Knightstone Island from property industry experts.
"We worked extremely hard to maintain and balance between modern living while retaining many of the historical features of the Grade II listed Victorian buildings, and to breathe new life into this popular landmark. The apartments have now sold out, which is further testament to its popularity."
Earlier this year the development was highly commended at the Daily Telegraph Your New Homes awards in the category for best waterfront development.
Entries to the Daily Mail awards were judged by a panel of independent professionals, chaired by Eric Pickles, British Shadow Secretary of State.
The awards are linked to the world's largest and most prestigious property competition, with Knightstone Island chosen to represent the UK in its category at the finals of the International Property Awards in the USA.
There are still two A3 commercial units available for occupation at the popular attraction, with prime waterfront locations. The units have planning permission for restaurant, bistro, café or retail, serving to provide new opportunities for businesses seeking to appeal to Knightstone Island's new residents and visitors to Weston-super-Mare.
